Kotor 2-Day Bay & Viewpoints
Montenegro's crown jewel. The boat to Our Lady of the Rocks from Perast, Kotor's old town in the early evening once the day visitors have gone, the fortress at sunset, then the serpentine road up to Lovćen, Njegoš's mausoleum and lunch in Njeguši, the mountain day most Kotor stays never include.

14:30Perast stroll, then the boat to Our Lady of the Rocks and a visit to the island church

17:30Guided Old Town walk in the early evening, after the day-visitor peak: Cathedral of St. Tryphon, the squares and the sea gate (about 1.5h)
19:00City walls climb towards San Giovanni Fortress for the sunset (1,350 steps, about 1.5h)

Ops Note
Kotor is busiest in the middle of the day, so the Old Town walk moves to the early evening. We set the walk and the climb by the sunset on the date: in spring and autumn, when the sun sets earlier, the climb starts first and the walk follows. The fortress climb is strenuous; less fit clients go only to the church of Our Lady of Remedy, about a third of the way up, or skip it. The Perast boat runs on the weather; if the bay is rough, the boat moves to day 2 morning before Lovćen.

Lovćen, Njeguši & Departure

09:00Drive up the Kotor serpentine road, 25 hairpin bends with stops above the bay, to Lovćen National Park (about 1.5h with stops, est.)
10:30Njegoš Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh: 461 steps through the tunnel to the summit view (entry included)
12:00Drive to Njeguši village (about 30 min, est.)
12:30Lunch in Njeguši: smoked ham, cheese and local dishes (non-pork menu on request)
14:00Optional short stop in Cetinje, the old royal capital: a walk along the main street (about 20 min from Njeguši, est.)
15:15Transfer to Tivat airport (about 1h, est.), back to Kotor, or on to Dubrovnik (about 3h plus the border, est.)
Ops Note
The mausoleum is open daily 09:00–18:00 from 11 April to 15 November and closed from 16 November to 10 April (National Museum of Montenegro, checked 22 Oct 2026). Outside that season, or if snow closes the mountain road, the day becomes Njeguši and Cetinje by the lower road, or a Budva and coast day. The serpentine road is winding and can bring on motion sickness; cloud can hide the views, so we check the forecast the evening before. In Cetinje we walk the town and do not plan museum entries. Day 2 suits flights from about 17:30.

Common Objections
"Can we do Kotor as a day trip from Dubrovnik?"
You can, but it's 2+ hours each way, plus border crossings. Staying overnight means you catch the bay at sunset, climb the fortress without cruise crowds, and do Lovćen mountain properly. Day trippers miss the magic.
"Is it too active?"
We can dial it down: stop the fortress climb at the church a third of the way up, or skip it, and enjoy the Lovćen views from the car instead of the 461 steps to the mausoleum. The boat to Our Lady of the Rocks is gentle; the only required activity is walking around the old town.
"What about the cruise crowds?"
We keep the old town out of the busy middle of the day: the guided walk runs in the early evening, after most day visitors and cruise passengers have gone, and the fortress follows at sunset. Day two is up on Lovćen, away from the crowds altogether.
