Romania in 8 Days: Transylvania's Castles and Saxon Villages
The Transylvania loop that every top-rated Romania tour shares, rebuilt around two-night bases, a home-cooked lunch in a Saxon village and the Transfăgărășan as the finale on a day when the road is open.
An 8-day private round trip from Bucharest through Transylvania: Peleș and Bran castles, Brașov, the Saxon village of Viscri, Sighișoara, Sibiu and Corvin Castle, returning over the Transfăgărășan road in summer with a night at its foot in Curtea de Argeș. Brașov and Sibiu have two nights each, and no day is planned past about four hours in the vehicle. A 10-day Classic version adds Maramureș and the Turda Salt Mine.
Two versions: Relaxed, 8 days or Classic, 10 days
Same start and finish, same private set-up. Choose the version with the client; the enquiry records which one.

Day 3: Bran Castle
A morning at Bran Castle, sold to the world as Dracula's castle and more interesting for its real history as a royal residence. Back in Brașov by early afternoon.
Free time: The afternoon and evening are free in Brașov; the cable car up Tâmpa is an easy add-on.
Operations note: Bran opens at 12:00 on Mondays and at 09:00 on other days (official site, checked 21 Oct 2026): on a Monday, start late. Go early in July and August to avoid the queue. Râșnov Fortress is not in the programme: the citadel is closed for rehabilitation, only its garden is open, and no reopening date is published (official site, checked 22 Oct 2026).
Day 4: Viscri to Sighișoara
Into the Saxon villages: Viscri, a UNESCO-listed fortified church in a village of painted farmhouses, with a home-cooked lunch at a village house. Afternoon arrival in Sighișoara, the inhabited medieval citadel with its clock tower, best walked in the evening light.
Free time: The evening is free inside the citadel.
Operations note: Viscri hosts are small households: confirm lunch capacity per group size; for 16+, split between two houses.
Day 5: Biertan to Sibiu
A guided morning in the Sighișoara citadel, then Biertan, the most impressive of the fortified churches, ringed by three walls. Arrival in Sibiu for an afternoon walk across the Large and Small Squares and the Bridge of Lies.
Free time: The evening is free.
Day 6: Corvin Castle
West to Hunedoara and Corvin Castle, the Gothic fortress with drawbridge and towers that sets the image most people have of a Transylvanian castle. In the evening, dinner with a family in a shepherd village of the Mărginimea Sibiului.
Free time: The late afternoon before dinner is free.
Operations note: Corvin Castle hours, especially on Mondays, are reported inconsistently: confirm per date with the castle.
Day 7: The Transfăgărășan to Curtea de Argeș
The scenic finale: the Transfăgărășan high road over the Făgăraș mountains, with stops at the glacial Bâlea Lake and the Vidraru Dam, down to Curtea de Argeș and its royal monastery church for the night. Outside the road's season, the route follows the Olt valley and stops at Cozia Monastery (~2.5–3 h, est.). Stopping here instead of driving on to Bucharest keeps the day to about four hours in the vehicle.
Free time: The evening is free in Curtea de Argeș.
Operations note: The high section of the Transfăgărășan opens only in summer (in 2026 it reopened on 12 June, checked 21 Oct 2026) and closes for events on some days. Sell it as a July–September feature; decide the route the day before.
Day 8: To Bucharest and depart
A morning drive across the plain to Bucharest airport. For evening flights, time in Bucharest on the way: the Palace of the Parliament (pre-booked) or the open-air Village Museum.
Free time: Any time before the transfer.
Operations note: Plan for flights from about 14:00; earlier flights need the last night in Bucharest instead. The Palace of the Parliament requires advance booking and passports on the day. Curtea de Argeș has small hotels: for 16+ check capacity, or stay in Pitești (~40 min nearer Bucharest).
Classic: 10 days / 9 nights
Romania in 10 days: Transylvania and Maramureș. Clients who want the full Romania loop of the classic circuits, Maramureș included, and accept a new hotel almost every night and one long driving day for it.

- One day of about five hours in the vehicle (day 4), started early; no Transfăgărășan day

Why this route works
- Reviewers of the best-rated Romania tours mostly complain about one-night stays and rushed final days: two two-night bases (Brașov, Sibiu), and a last night at Curtea de Argeș so the mountain road and the airport run are never the same day.
- Peleș fixes the start day: the route can only depart so that day 2 falls Wednesday to Sunday, and not in the November closure.
- The Transfăgărășan is the last touring day, not the first, so it can be swapped for the Olt valley the day before without breaking the route.
Make it your own
- 10 days with Maramureș and Turda: the Classic version on this page.
- 7 days: drop the Corvin Castle day and the second Sibiu night.
- Combined with Bulgaria: from Bucharest, cross the Danube at Ruse–Giurgiu to Veliko Tarnovo (~4 h, est.) and continue with the Bulgaria programme.
Planning note: Drive times are estimates, not guaranteed journey times. Border procedures, vehicles, guides, entrances, accommodation and all inclusions are verified for the requested dates and nationalities before any proposal is confirmed. No fixed price or departure is advertised.
Questions about this programme
Eight days from Bucharest covers Peleș, Bran, Brașov, Sighișoara, Sibiu and Corvin Castle with two two-night stops. Four days is the market's rushed minimum; ten adds Maramureș.
Only in summer: plan it for July to September. In 2026 the high section reopened on 12 June (checked 21 Oct 2026). Out of season the route returns through the Olt valley.
Mondays and Tuesdays, and for about a month each autumn for conservation (November in 2026, per the official site, checked 21 Oct 2026). The programme schedules Peleș on a Wednesday to Sunday.
There is no border check: both countries have been full Schengen members since 1 January 2025. Clients still carry the passport or ID they entered the Schengen area with.
Relaxed (8 days) for first-time clients who want Transylvania without packing every day: two two-night bases, Corvin Castle, a village dinner near Sibiu and, from July to September, the Transfăgărășan. Classic (10 days) for clients who also want Maramureș (the Merry Cemetery, the UNESCO wooden churches), the Turda Salt Mine and Cluj, and accept a new hotel almost every night and one drive of about five hours. Both run from Bucharest to Bucharest; the enquiry records which version.
