Bulgaria in 8 Days: Rila, Melnik, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo

Why this route works
- The common market version adds the Black Sea coast (Nesebar, Varna) and pays for it with very long drives; reviewers of those tours complain about it. The Relaxed version leaves the coast out; the Classic version adds it in 10 days with one long day, started early, and two nights on the coast.
- Melnik replaces Bansko as the first mountain night: shorter drive from Rila and a quieter village, but very few rooms, so large groups sleep in Sandanski.
- Day 8 is a long transfer: it suits afternoon or evening flights; for morning flights, move the last night to Sofia and drive on day 7.
Make it your own
- 10 days with the Black Sea: the Classic version on this page (Nesebar, Varna, the Madara Rider).
- 7 days: drop the second Plovdiv night; Bachkovo is then not possible.
- Combined with Romania: end in Bucharest instead of Sofia (via the Danube bridge at Ruse, ~4 h, est.) and continue with the Romania programme, Bucharest to Bucharest.
Planning note: Drive times are estimates, not guaranteed journey times. Border procedures, vehicles, guides, entrances, accommodation and all inclusions are verified for the requested dates and nationalities before any proposal is confirmed. No fixed price or departure is advertised.
Questions about this programme
Eight days covers Sofia, Rila Monastery, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo without a rushed day: seven nights with three two-night stops. Add two or three days for the Black Sea coast.
May, June and September. Late May to mid-June adds the rose harvest in the Valley of the Roses; July and August are hot in the Thracian plain.
The euro, since 1 January 2026 (checked 21 Oct 2026). Older guides that tell travellers to bring leva are out of date.
Yes, by coach, with one change: Melnik has few rooms, so a large group stays in Sandanski nearby and visits Melnik for the tasting.
Relaxed (8 days) for clients who want time in each place: four bases, three of them for two nights, no day over about four hours of driving, and a night in the wine village of Melnik. Classic (10 days) for clients who want the full circuit with the Black Sea (Nesebar, Varna) and the Madara Rider, and accept four hotel changes and one day of about five hours on the road. Both are private and run from Sofia to Sofia; the enquiry records which version.
