Medjugorje pilgrimage: ground handling

Medjugorje is in Bosnia and Herzegovina — a village in the municipality of Čitluk, about 25 km from Mostar, in the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno. It has been in Bosnia and Herzegovina since independence in 1992; before that it was part of Yugoslavia. Groups arriving from Croatia cross an international border, which is the single biggest variable in any transfer plan.

Four realistic gateways. Mostar (OMO) is closest at about 25 km but has very limited scheduled traffic, so in practice it serves charters. Split (SPU) is the usual choice for groups from the UK and Ireland on flight availability. Dubrovnik (DBV) works well when the programme also takes in the coast. Sarajevo (SJJ) suits groups combining Medjugorje with central Bosnia, and like Mostar it avoids a border on the transfer.

Most organised pilgrimages allocate three to five nights in the village inside a seven-night package. But which nights matters more than how many: the parish leads the Stations of the Cross on Cross Mountain on Fridays and the Rosary on Apparition Hill on Sundays, so a Monday-to-Thursday stay contains neither devotion while a Friday-to-Sunday stay contains both. The reported apparitions have never been declared supernatural by the Church. On 19 September 2024 the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published a Note, "The Queen of Peace", approved by Pope Francis on 28 August 2024, granting a nihil obstat to the devotion. The Note authorises public acts of devotion and says the faithful "are authorized to give it their adherence in a prudent manner", while stating that this "does not imply a declaration of the supernatural character of the phenomenon". It also asks that pilgrims be advised that "pilgrimages are not made to meet with alleged visionaries" but to encounter Christ. For an operator the practical effect is that pilgrimages are permitted and organised openly, and that brochure copy should describe the devotion and the reported messages as reported, never assert the apparitions as established fact.

Harder than most first-time pilgrims expect. Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) and Cross Mountain (Križevac) are both climbed on loose, uneven natural rock rather than steps or paved path, with no handrails. Cross Mountain is the longer and steeper of the two; its hill stands at 520 m and the concrete cross at the summit is 8.56 m high, erected in 1934. The parish publishes no official walk time and third-party estimates vary widely, from about 45 minutes to two and a half hours each way depending on pace, age and stops at the Stations. Firm closed footwear matters more than fitness, and no vehicle access to either summit is published, so plan on foot.

The parish publishes two fixed patterns, and the switch is by calendar date, not by the clock change. From 1 June to 31 August the evening programme runs 18:00–21:00, with the Rosary at 18:00 and Mass at 19:00. From 1 September to 31 May it runs 17:00–20:00, with the Rosary at 17:00 and Mass at 18:00. Confession runs alongside the whole evening block. Note that several third-party pilgrimage pages describe a "1 May to end of September" summer schedule — that is wrong, and a programme built on it will have your group arriving an hour late.

The main evening Mass is celebrated in Croatian and translated simultaneously into nine languages — Croatian, German, English, Italian, Spanish, French, Polish, Slovak and Russian — with around twenty languages during major parish events. There is no separately named "international Mass". Morning Masses are celebrated in various languages, but the parish does not publish their times on its current site, so we confirm those with the Information Office for your dates. The parish asks groups to contribute €2 per person for the whole pilgrimage towards the translation and broadcast service, payable on group registration.

Yes, but only in one of three approved places: the parish church, the Adoration chapel or the John Paul II Hall, arranged in coordination with the Sanctuary Information Office and the sisters who oversee the sacristy. Mass is expressly forbidden in guesthouses, private homes, in chapels within the parish territory without permission, and on the hills. Prayer gatherings, as distinct from Mass, may be organised with your group at Apparition Hill, Calvary and around the Risen Christ statue. If an operator has promised your group a Mass at the hotel, that promise cannot be kept.

Yes, and this is the operational trap that catches groups. Every priest who wants to concelebrate or hear confessions must hold a valid celebret no older than one year and must register at the Information Office to receive a registration card. The parish states plainly that priests without registration will not be permitted to concelebrate. Priests should also bring alb and stole and sign the sacristy record book before Mass. We flag this in the pre-departure pack so it is handled on arrival rather than discovered at the sacristy door.

The 38th Youth Festival runs 27–31 July 2027, with the theme "And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts" (Col 3:15). It has been moved out of its usual 1–6 August slot because the World Youth Meeting in Seoul falls in early August 2027. Any 2027 programme built on the assumption of early August will miss it, and village accommodation for those dates goes early. The parish has also published three 2027 retreats: married couples 3–6 February, pilgrimage organisers and group leaders 8–12 March, and priests 5–9 July.

Two dates matter and they are often confused. The first reported apparition was on 24 June 1981, which is the date the Holy See's 2024 Note uses. The parish celebrates the anniversary on 25 June, the day the group of six was completed, and it is one of the busiest days of the year. The Peace Walk from Humac to Medjugorje takes place on 24 June. Accommodation and coaches tighten well in advance for both.

There is no official published policy on tour-coach parking or centre access in Medjugorje, which is worth knowing before you promise a door-drop. Hotels vary: some publish their own bus parking, others do not. Several streets in the centre are narrow and effectively pedestrian, so the practical answer is property-specific. We confirm the drop-off and parking arrangement for your hotel and your coach size as part of the ground plan rather than assuming it.
