- Kravice Waterfalls is the headline swimming experience near Mostar — natural pools below the falls, changing area, cafés on site
- Blagaj / Buna river is closest (15 min) but the spring water is cold year-round — better for a dip and photos than a long swim
- Neretva river spots exist in and around Mostar but currents and cold water make guided/known spots the only sensible option for clients
- Season: swimmable May–September; peak comfort mid-June to early September
- Logistics: all spots are day-trip distance; we pair swimming with Mostar Old Town or a Herzegovina loop
Where to swim near Mostar
Mostar itself sits on the Neretva, but the swimming clients actually want is a short transfer away. Three options cover almost every brief.
Kravice Waterfalls (best all-round)
About 40 minutes south of Mostar, Kravice is a wide curtain of falls dropping into a natural pool that is safe and popular for swimming. There is a changing area, cafés, and shade — which makes it the practical choice for FIT and groups alike.
Distance: ~40 minutes from Mostar Old Town
Swim season: May–September (most comfortable mid-June to early September)
Best timing: arrive by 10:00 — the site fills quickly in July–August and the walk down/up is exposed to the sun
See our activity page for the full operational detail: Kravice Waterfalls.
The Buna at Blagaj (closest)
Just 15 minutes from Mostar, Blagaj sits where the Buna river emerges from a cliff spring beside the historic Dervish tekke. The water is strikingly clear but cold all year — it is spring-fed. It works better as a refreshing dip, a photo stop, and a coffee by the river than as a long swim.
Distance: ~15 minutes from Mostar
Note: cold water; strong current near the spring — clients should stay to the calmer edges.
The Neretva in and around Mostar
There are river spots on the Neretva, but currents and cold water make this the option we only recommend at known, guided locations. For most clients we steer swimming to Kravice and keep the Neretva for the Old Bridge views and (for the adventurous) rafting upstream.
Season and water temperature
Water is realistically comfortable from mid-June to early September. Shoulder months (May, late September) are swimmable for hardier clients but the spring-fed spots (Blagaj) stay cold throughout. For May and October programs we usually position these as scenic stops rather than swim stops.
Safety and group notes
- Kravice is the safest swim spot but the pool has deeper sections — advise non-swimmers to stay near the edges; there are no lifeguards.
- Blagaj/Buna: cold shock and current near the spring — keep clients to the calm edges.
- Neretva: only at guided/known spots; not for casual client swimming.
- Groups: we split larger groups for the walk down to Kravice and stagger arrival to avoid the mid-day crush.
- Season check: confirm dates fall mid-June to early September for genuine swimming
- Towels/swimwear: remind clients — there are no rentals on site
- Footwear: the walk to the Kravice pool is uneven; suggest sandals with grip
- Timing: Kravice pickup for a ~09:00 arrival beats crowds and heat
- Combine: pair with Mostar Old Town or a Blagaj + Počitelj loop for a full day
